As I understand it, they're pretty heavily in debt. Aren't they still paying off debts to the EIHL or whoever helped bail them out in the final few EIHL seasons?
My understanding is that all of the debt is owed to Neil Morris, I think it was about ~£600k and that basically he couldn't fund them out of his own pocket anymore. There was talk of the EIHL giving them a bit of money ~£10k or so towards the end to help with costs, but as usual that is speculation and rumours. It wouldn't be the first time that the league has helped out a team though (they paid for some of Hull's travel expenses after the conference setup was introduced).

British hockey is filled with rumours, people in the know, people pretending to be in the know, and people making stuff up. It's also filled with politics and teams regularly going bust!

This off season has been particularly turbulent!
I think we first went in 1999 (Storm vs Knights). I still actually have the game programmes from the two Storm games we watched. But I was always more interested in the NHL to begin with. I only started to get interested in seeing British hockey once I finished university and finally had some income to spend on seeing games (along with the spare time to travel by train to see the games as there were no teams near my uni).

As I understand it, the dispute/disjoint dates back from the time of the Ice Hockey Superleague which replaced the British Hockey League in 1995 or 1996 (but I'm not sure how or why). The Superleague was effectively a rival of the English Ice Hockey Association's leagues (i.e. the BNL and EPL). I don't think the rivalry is really there any more - but there's still a lack of cooperation and hence British hockey is so disjointed. It has been really detrimental to the development of young players and to the national team in general. The EPL is a bit confusing because it is classed as a developmental league for some reason (it's to get around immigration/EU, IIHF or tax rules - I can't remember which) - but really it's just a semi-pro league.
It makes me laugh that they actually went to the trouble of registering companies with the Elite League name!! I don't really know what that was meant to achieve. It's also funny that one of the people that did this was the Fife Flyers owner, who are now back in the EIHL. I imagine there was a bit of apologising going on when they asked to join :-D

I think the EPL development tag is due to the work permit regulations or something (rather than IIHF).

You think that's unhelpful bickering! You should register on the Hockey Forum (THF, basically the biggest forum for British Ice hockey - thehockeyforum.com) That place is the definition of unhelpful bickering :-D

Anyway, Kris Beech signs for Belfast Giants. Bunch of games (& points) in top leagues in both NA & Europe. Looks on a downward trajectory, not fantastic stats in Austria last year, albeit the quality over here will be a bit lower.

Nothing official, London sounds like it's a go but I'm guessing it'll be another season or two before they join. No idea about team 12 rumours Aberdeen or Liverpool

I guess the Deeside news also answer who the original 10th EPL team was.

Yeah sounds like Phoenix moving to Deeside put an end to that. There's an interesting suggestion about Phoenix's future on THF - that the Phoenix franchise will move to Liverpool for 2016/17, leaving Storm as the sole Manchester team and Deeside playing in the EPL. Although I'm sure there's no basis to that suggestion, it does kind of make sense. I don't see Phoenix having a good season this season and the future arena sounds very improbable as things stand.

Having Scholes/Red Hockey invest in so many teams is rather alarming in some ways. If he decides that hockey is no longer worth investing in, then what happens to all of the teams he owns...

Yes, it's not good when 1 company starts owning all of the teams. Doesn't really suggest that the sport is moving forward really.

I think without Hull joining the EPL, there would've been 2 teams playing out of Deeside in the EPL which can't have been sustainable in the long run.

Nottingham sign Logan MacMillan (who, IIRC, was drafted at #19 a few years ago), and Andy Bohmbach. Theres talk of them running an import short at the start of the season, but they probably have the better Britpack.

Another guy with an interesting past (MacMillan). Will be interesting to see how he gets on. Bohmbach looks a good signing on paper!

I'm liking the look of the Storm team so far. Kalemba and Salazar look pretty good (again, on paper), more signings like that and they should do well this season

Yeah it's sad to see him go. Nice to see him get some international coverage. He probably had a few more seasons left in him, but I certainly felt he'd slowed down this past season.

Apparently he is a real gentleman off the ice. I have heard numerous anecdotes from fans about things he has done for them.

He is occasional member of Team Slovenia..never really catch my eye to be honest. But due to $$$ problems in our hockey im pretty sure he made himself a big favour moving to GB..Wont be surprised if there will be another player from Slovenia soon in UK..I do know Blaz Emersic playing successfuly for Milton Keynes for years now.

Just wondering what is salary ranges in British hockey for imports?

I believe the top imports will get up to £1,200 a week. Contracts are only August -> April, ~9 months so this is roughly £46,800 for the season (66,000 euros or $73,000), which pro rata is £62,400 per year which is roughly 88,000 euros or $97,000 a year (i.e. over 12 months).

I don't think many players will be earning this much, rumours are it's only Mathieu Roy (http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=12151) who does.

Typically, players would probably earn closer to half of this amount, maybe even less, but the better ones are probably quite close to £1,000 a week.

They also get flats to stay in, sometimes a car.

and what is most important money on time ...thats something that here you could only dream of. If he signed a 25.000 € deal in Manchester he did a good business comparing to lets say if he would of stay in Olimpija Ljubljana that plays EBEL !

That doesn't sound good with regards to getting paid & on time!!

British hockey has seen a number of clubs who have struggled to pay players (on time or at all). Things appear to be getting better in the Elite League, although saying that Hull went bust this summer (it was only a matter of time really, they've struggled for a long time and couldn't make it work despite not paying any ice rent!). The other 9 teams seem to be okay, and have been helped by changes in the league structure (more matches against local teams means lower costs and higher attendances). Manchester Storm are the new team in the league, so we'll see how they do.

A few of the owners have shown what can be done to make a sustainable team, that is successful on and off the ice. Typically this has required a rich owner, and there's not many of those around who are willing to buy hockey teams in the UK!

Had to pleasure to meet him. He's such a nice and polite guy. Quite shy too, doesn't seem to like any attention (I didn't go all groupy on him, just wanted to say him, obviously!) He was very thankful for our support and all that stuff. I then read his book and thought I'd like to get it signed, so, messaged him on facebook! He replied saying sure he remembered me and just take it to the guy outside the changing room one game and he'll sign it for me.

I think he's wasted far to much time at the Phoenix though. He's bascially the reason I followed them for so long (after realising Neil Morris is a moron etc etc). Now he isn't playing he really needs to either move to the EIHL or move to Europe I think.
