djskek wrote:After more than a year I started again a game. Since I've been busy with the Hockeyallsvenskan for a year, I decided to take IK Pantern. Before the start of the game, I have put together the current team with the editor.

Exhibition games:

I am curious to see how this will continue.
So, 1 1/2 season I have already played.

Back to HockeyAllsvenskan. We won the regular season.

In the Championship game we play against Oskarshamm. Very very concise series.

0:1 back
1:2 back

In the end I won the series but still 3:2. All games were decided with 1 goal difference.

In relegation playoff we played against Rögle. Was easier as CS Game. We won the series 4:2. :joy: Go to SHL

Best players: Bergenström, Santorelli and Ross.

biggest annoyance:
Erik Nyström was sent to us by Frölunda. Important player for me. And then, Frölunda transfer him after a few games to Gap (France :deadhorse:). At this position I was already weakly occupied and a new transfer of players to us was not possible.

Noooow we play in the SHL:

Actually it is unbelievable what the guys perform. My player budget 1.270.000 million. It's a joke against the other teams. I am totally happy when I can hire players like Wannström or Williams.

The other teams oblige one free agent NHL player after another.
for example: J. Fast, PA Parenteau, K. Quincey, J. McBain, Mel. Karlsson, J. Enroth :-D

No matter what happens, I'm proud!

Re: How's it going in EHM 1? What team are you?

Post by philou21 »

So my first season in the AHL went really well. We finished 52-21-3 good for the 3rd spot in the league. Like I said before I ended up with a pretty good team to start with, especially offensively. Defense was alright and the goalies were ok too. What's special in the AHL is that you can't control some things, which can be annoying. Two trades happened during the season where I lost my second center (both times). Luckily it did not affect the team that much. I also lost my best defenseman for a couple of months because he got brought up by Columbus.

My players had a hard time getting use to my training schedule. (nine-o tactic) I had alot of problems with various injuries all season long. Luckily it was mostly ten days injuries but I also had three three months but it was on players that I wasn't using alot.

Here are my players stats: http://imgur.com/43445Sg

I got five thirty goals scorers which is very nice and Jakobsson finished on the top in pts. He was also 7 goals away from the top goal scorer. If he played all the regular season games he probably had alot of chances to finish on top.

Heading into the playoffs we take on Grand Rapids in the frist round. Our regular season stats against them is 4-2-2 so it's gonna be a close one! We managed to win the serie 3-1! It was indeed close as 3 of the 4 games finished with a 1 goal difference. Heading to the next round we are against Charlotte. They were our nemesis all season long beating us 8-3-1. So let's say I don't have high hope for the serie...Like I expected we lost this serie 4-2. We even lost 7-2 and 13-2 (you read hat right) back to back. Charlotte was unstoppable all year long. They managed to outshot us each game by the double, reaching 50 shots per game in 4 of the six games while my team barely made 20-25 shots per games. :thdn:

The call of the NHL just rang. The Buffalo Sabres just offered me the position of GM. I'm very surprised by that even though I'm having succes with everyting I'm touching! :D They have a decent team, still having Eichel, Kane, Risto, Reinhart but they have all huge salary and contracts. They have no good goalies and only 2 good defensemen. I already declined the offer but what do you guys would have done? I'm really waiting to win my Calder Cup before moving! :D

Like someone else posted a while back in a similar situation,
don't leave a position you enjoy, unless you have a new spot you really desire

Started a save with the Predators when the actual NHL playoffs started and I hopped on the Predators/Subban bandwagon. Today I finished the first season and won my first ever Stanley Cup on this EHM version! And guess what? It was against the Canadiens which made the victory even sweeter(the whole Subban-Weber trade :-D )

I have finally started my first proper carrer in this game after spending a year with tweaking, editing etc... Once 9.4 rosters came out with additional leagues I decided to start a carrer as usual - with all leagues selected, with no reputation and unemployed. After a few months I got appointed as a Stjernen manager in Norway. The first thing I noticed was a much more challanging roster building. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the game itself, or with edited financial part of database or only the coincidence as Stjernen seems to be by far the poorest team in the league. With approximately of 35k€ budget, I had some problems building the team for the first season I started somewhere in the January with 10 points behind the eight place, which secures the playoff spot as well as saves the team from relegation battle. In the last 15 games of regular season, I indeed failed to gather enough points to stay in the league, though I won the relegation league and stayed in the Norwegian first division.

In second season, I have build my own team very carefully within the budged. Among the projected stars were Hungarian youngster coming from Linkoping (SEL) Vilmos Gallo, expirienced Czech forward Marek Las and non-EU import Adam Schmidt. I didn't get the goalie I wanted (my first choice was Matt Dalton, but he decided to go to ECHL over Norway), so I decided to fill the spot with Norwegian goalie Steffen Soberg, who was a backup at Norwegian force Valerenga before joining my team. Also, the defence seemed not competitive enough for the challange. Anyway, my first season went reasonobly well and I reached the semi finals of Norwegian league in my second season.

Another thing I noticed and which I find very nice is the fact that players are not willing to accept contract offers too soon and most of them go to free agent market before rejoining the team. I managed to extend the contract of two out of three best forwards, though. Vilmos Gallo was my best scorer in second season with 46 points in 44 games and at his age of 21, he decided to stay with me for another season, which I'm very excitied about. I also put team option in his contract. Also Adam Schmidt (43 points in 44 games) decided to rejoin Stjernen after a few days in FA market, while the third man, Marek Las (45 games, 46 games) decided to return home to play in czech first division (second tear) with Trebic. Again I failed to sign a better goalie and Steffen Soberg (35 games, 3.02 GAA and 88,8% SA) will start my third season in Stjernen. Interesting new addition include Matt Leitner, who will center my 1st line (last year he gathered 60 points in ECHL), Jonas Andersson should make my D a bit thougher (7.04 AvR last year with Frisk Asker in Norway) and Marek Las's replacement Yegor Yegorov, who scored 9 goals in last years Div 1 with his homeland Ukraine. I also expect some interesting stuff from my third line center from South Korea, Sang-Wook Kim. I chased Kim last year as well, but he rather signed for Kazakhstan side Ertis, where he scored 44 points in 34 games, before getting released after getting his leg broken and being sidelined for a couple of months. This preseason I picked him again and his leg seemed to be ready for full action, once the first puck drops in the new season.
In my third season my goals are semifinals, with some hope to the finals.

My seconds NCAA season ... well it went better than the first, but not by much. 10th instead of 11th :-)
Big surprise has been my lithuanian winger Arturas Laukaitis. Despite not great ability-wise he ended 2nd in scoring on my team and by far being best goalscorer with 16 goals in 34 games.

At the end of the season i decided to sack my head coach after two rather bad seasons. American Kasey Russo is now the new Head Coach, a newcomer in the scene

Just finished my 1st NCAA season with Minnesota. I lost Bischoff at the start of the season (Signed by the Islanders) and made 2 trades. Acquired Patrick Khodorenko and Arvid Johnson. Johnson then left at the end of the season. I am a bit disappointed, because I traded for him because he was 17 and young enough to play a few seasons for me. I did manage to sign some good prospects from the USHL though: Jacob Pivonka and Jack Adams.

Will be fun to see how the draft goes. I have 2 players who are in the NHL Draft rankings. I like the way that is mentioned in news articles.

After a little break from things after my stupidly long Jets save I decided it was time for a new challenge. I did a short attempt at a challenge rules save with the Canucks, but we won 5 cups in a row off the bat so I retired that save before I got very attached to it.

So here's the premise of the new save: The NHL finally got fed up with the Saddledome and relocated Calgary to Seattle, but because I like building teams from scratch all older players/lower end prospects went to free agency and all core/key players were relocated to other teams (so I can't just sign them all back from FA). This meant that at July 2nd the Seattle Shadowrunners have 0 players on roster and a very slim pool of unsigned prospects (didn't remove their rights, except for all goalies). This is what I like to do in my Swe-2 saves, modding in my hometown team and building it from scratch. So why not try it at the NHL level? I'd seen someone else do it with Seattle Metropolitans on these boards earlier so I decided I wanted to take a crack at it too.

By training camp these were the moves we had made:
Image
Many of the players were gotten purely to help give us some depth in case of mass injuries and some AHL farmhands. I did not consider that essentially all of them are overaged so our AHL team only has 4 dmen and 2 forward lines at the time and have to roll all the veteran status players, but that's their issue. I'll have to try and get a bit more non-CHL players in the draft so I can quickly fill out the AHL roster for next season.

Due to our somewhat fishy lineup I'm playing a fair few players out of position. Troy Brouwer is technically a winger but he's the best faceoff guy we have so he's taken up 1st line C, with Jirí Tlustý on his left and Val Nichushkin on his right; We acquired the latter in a trade with Dallas for a prospect I'll never use, a 1st rounder 5 years from now and I think a 3rd rounder 5 years from now. Overall that's a steal for us. I'm currently at January 1st in the save and Tlustý is at about 0.7 PPG, Brouwer is at 0.9 PPG and Nichushkin is at 0.8 PPG. So needless to say for a cobbled together 1st line they are doing work.

Our 2nd line is centered by the other prospect I actually spent real resources to get, Joel Eriksson Ek cost us a 1st rounder and a 2nd rounder 4 years from now as well as another prospects I'll never use. Overall it's a complete steal for us, who will likely be our #1 center from next season until about 13 seasons from now. On his left wing playing the slightly more defensive role is Zach Boychuk, who we got from FA and on his right is natural center Tyler Kelleher, an undersized undrafted college player who I got on a free. Boychuk has sadly had some injury issues but he's currently sitting on 0.8 PPG, Eriksson Ek is at 0.9 PPG and Kelleher is at around 0.8 PPG, not bad for an undrafted player who's 5 inches short of being considered undersized. At one point earlier in the season this entire line was on 2.0 PPG but then we had 6 games where all of them went on a drought and we lost 6 games in a row, taking us from 2nd in the Conference to 11th.

Our 3rd line is centered by Linden Vey who's had a quite poor season (he's had enough 5 rating games for me to discipline his determination from 13->14 and his Work Rate from 13->15). On his left wing is either Justin Fontaine who we picked up from FA or Stefan Matteau who we picked up from waivers. On the right wing we have David Jones who we also got from FA. Overall this line has struggled the most defensively, but after I've swapped Matteau for Fontaine as the slightly more defensive forward on the line their fortune seems to have changed. They are producing offensively though, so that's a plus.

The 4th line is centered by Brian Boyle who we traded a prospect I'll never use for, while also picking up Tampa's 6th round pick this year. We need to fill out our prospect pool so even a low pick like that has some value to me at this point. And the prospect we got rid of was in the KHL so he wasn't helping our AHL depth. On his left wing is Morgan Klimchuk, who's filling in on the 1st line because Tlustý is injured and currently scoring at 1 PPG pace, so it's likely he will keep that spot. On the right we have Phil Di Giuseppe who is another waiver wire pickup. Overall the 4th line started the season scoring at about 0.7 PPG pace, but has since slowed down considerably.

For defense we have Dylan DeMelo who we got for a 3rd round pick 5 years down the line and another prospect I'll never play taking the slightly more defensive role and Dennis Wideman who we signed back from FA in the offensive role. Wideman is also quarterbacking our 1st PP unit and has about 0.7 PPG at this point.

The 2nd pairing is made up of Jyrki Jokipakka (FA) and Wisniewski (FA) and they currently have the best +/- on our team, but lack the same level of offensive production as our 1st pairing.

The 3rd pairing is made up of either Dylan Olsen (FA) or Andrew MacDonald (waiver) and Ryan Murphy (waiver). Adam Fox started the season on this line and the PP, but did such a poor job I had to send him to the minors. We got MacDonald in on waivers as a 5M$ paperweight to hit the salary floor. But he's done well enough to share the 5-6 job with Olsen.

In net we got back Elliott and Johnson from FA, because really there are almost no FA goalies at the start of the 9.5db of NHL quality. Right before the season started we traded some spare parts for Linus Ullmark who's looking like he might become a good backup. We also traded some other spare parts for Jonathan Bernier to be our new backup in place of Johnson and sent him down to the Minors. Johnson started the season with a .840SV% and we needed a bit more cap hit to actually avoid fines (I accidentally targeted last season's cap floor, old habit)

The goal of the season ahead of it starting was to try and fight tooth and nail to get the last wildcard spot. We're currently very much in that race, there's about 4 points between 11th and 8th in the west right now so it's shaping up to be a very exciting race. We are a hair behind Winnipeg for the team shooting the most in the league, and we have the 4th best shooting% in the league, we are the 3rd highest scoring team in the West as a result. Our downfall is our defense, we are bottom half on limiting shots against us and we have the 5th worst goaltending in the league.

Overall the season's been a success though, having almost all of my free agency risks pay off and Morgan Klimchuk growing into a decent top 6 forward out of nowhere. Not to mention Boychuck flirting with 1 PPG. Our 2nd line is actually performing like a top tier 2nd line, despite being made up of a "draft bust" in Boychuck, a raw prospect in Joel Eriksson Ek and an undrafted tiny college player in Tyler Kelleher. Eriksson Ek had grown a huge amount during the first half of the season, and Nichushkin has grown a fair bit too. So both the pieces I paid for look like they will pan out, and one of the free ones is as well.

Because of how well Brouwer and Wideman have been doing Dallas has started to poke around seeing if maybe they can trade for them (they can't I need them for cap reasons). But I'm looking forward to targeting a starting goalie, a top 6 center and top 4 defencemen in the coming drafts. I also really, really need a playmaking LW or Center to pair up with Nichushkin; It's quite obvious that Val is a more-or-less pure trigger man and he currently lacks a distinguished setup man to make the most of him. Brouwer is mostly scoring goals from center on the first line and Tlustý is sort of bullied into being the playmaker by virtue of being the worst scorer on the line. But if we had a proper playmaker with Nichushkin I could certainly see him hit 50 goals and 100 points at his peak. He reminds me a fair bit of Brayden Bonar from my Jets save, since he also was reliant on a pure playmaker at his side to truly unlock his potential.

This is what the league table looks like at the minute, it sure is tight at the line:
Image
We really do lack the pieces to put together a scary power play, and since your best penalty killer is your goalie, and our goalie is the 5th worst in the league; We don't exactly kill penalties well.

With some luck we'll win our 2 games in hand and reclaim the 8th position.

Second season's over with Cleveland and we killed it! We went 60-13-3 good for 123 pts with 17 pts ahead of Charlotte, the team behind us. We were not as amazing as Hartford though, who went 68-6-2.... :notworthy:

Even with all my first line from last season gone, some players like Abramov were able to step their game up. I finished with five players in the top 20 scorer in the AHL. A thumbs up to Aaltonen and Nystrom who did a pretty good job in their first season! Unfortunately I grabbed Nystrom via the UFA and he signed with the Ducks couple of weeks ago so he won't be back next season. Here's the players stats...

Image

First round of the playoffs we're facing Iowa. We did well against in the regular season with a record of 6-2. Great surprise for me as the Jackets got eliminated in the first round they sent down two VERY good rookies. One center and one d-men with alot of green attributes. Let's say that I'm more than happy to see them! We easily won the serie 3-0.

Into the second we're facing Grand Rapids. We went 6-2 against them just like with Iowa. They're pretty good in the playoffs though so I didn't expect an easy win. We managed to clinch the serie 4-2. In those four wins we had two shutouts!

Third round is against Texas. We never played against them in the regular season so I absolutely don't know what to expect. Meanwhile Sweden offered me the GM job for the tournament (My GM is half Swede/Half Canadian) but I refused. So we started that serie with three straight shutout wins and we won the last game 4-3 to clinche the serie 4-0. Poddubny was on fire with 10 pts in four games.

In the finale we are against.....big surprise! Hartford!!! It was as predictable as the NBA finale this year. We never played against them and now I'm really scared since they were almost undefeated in the regular season. I hope I can get the win there...This is their goalie by the way.

Image

We quickly went down 0-2 in the serie. Close games but it's impossible to score against them. My goalie got injured in the second game but luckily he was back on time for game #3. Coming back home helped as we tied the serie. In game #4 we tied the game with a minute left and won in OT. Pretty lucky win if you ask me! Back to Hartford we were trailing 0-2 after the first and I decided tweak my lines a bit. Wise decision as we won 5-2! Back to Cleveland I was hoping we could won the finale at home and we were on fire winning 6-3 to clinch the serie 4-2 and the Calder Cup!! =D>

Congrats on the cup Philou!

My poor Seattle team was injury central throuhgout March madness, we saw Wideman go out for a few weeks as well as Eriksson Ek, Brouwer, Tlustý and Boychuk. But regardless at the end of March in the 7th to last game of the season we faced San Jose who we were fighting to the 3rd spot in the Pacific. We ended up beating them 3-2 in a nailbiting contest and thus we headed into the final 6 games of the season with a comfortable 5 point gap to them as well as every single tie-breaker in our favor, meaning we were essentially 6 points clear of them. At that point nothing short of a miracle would see San Jose pass us as they hadn't been able to win more than 3 games in a row ever during this season. Queue a miracle...in typical EHM fashion.

In the loadscreen between that SJ win and the game against the Canucks the day after Brian Elliott gets a 3 week injury that means we won't have him for the rest of the regular season. That shouldn't have been too bad since slightly less than 1% separated him from Bernier. But 4 minutes into the game against the Canucks Dylan DeMelo goes out with an injury, 40 seconds later Jyrki Jokipakka also goes out with an injury, that's 2/3 of our defensive defensemen out for the rest of the season. Bernier played like garbage and we lost the game by a single goal. Brouwer who's been insane for us this season with a PPG pace throughout and almost never a bad game had a 5 rating game.

A few days later we once again face the Canucks, we have both their goalies figured out at this point. But the sneaky silly billies pulled up Demko, which was no small part in their previous win. This game they started Miller though and we shelled him with 4 goals in 12 shots. At that point the win looked like a done deal, but they swapped in Demko who conceded 2 goals on the following 18 shots. But scoring 6 goals and outshooting our opponents we surely won, right? Nope, Bernier continued making his best "Rinne in Pittsburgh"-impression. Causing us to lose 7-6 in SO. Again Brouwer put up a 5 rating game.

It should be noted that SJ has won both their games during this same period, meaning they are now only 2 points behind us with 4 games remaning.

On the last day of March we then face Nashville, Rinne has a sub .850SV% against us thus far so a win is all but guaranteed from that game. Nope, Bernier continues being horrendous beyond belief and Brouwer puts up a 4 rating game. SJ naturally wins their game. We're now tied, but we have the tie-breaker.

We now come up against Minnesota, we have Dubnyk at sub .900SV% against us so this should be a very winnable game (but at this point I know the game won't let that happen). Queue a .800 game from Bernier and a 6 rating game from Brouwer and we lose it, SJ again wins their game. We're now 2 points behind SJ.

We still have a shot at the playoffs in two ways, Nashville are only 2 points ahead of us with the final wildcard slot and assuming SJ won't keep being unbeatable we could still get that 3rd Pacific spot too. But I know that won't happen, because the pattern here is pretty clear.

We proceed to lose the last 2 game of the season as well. SJ wins their remaining two game, as does Nashville. If only 1 of all the things that happened went down I'd say it was poor luck. When all of them happen at the exact same day in game that's BS. So to end the season I had my top 2 def dmen injured in the same game, my starter injured in the morning skate before that game. My 1 PPG center put up a 5.2 rating average over the last 6 games of the season and had a -10 +/- rating over those same games. Our top goal-scorer with 32 goals prior to these last 6 games also went on a 6 game goal drought at the same time as Bernier put up a .864 and the team we were racing won 6 games in a row, their longest winning streak of the season by a mile. And all at the same time, so we were incredibly hard done by.

Honestly it doesn't matter too much though, with the sorry state of our goaltending we couldn't have gone too far in the playoffs regardless. But it would have been nice to have a shot at giving Eriksson Ek, Nichushkin and some of the other prospects some more imporant matches and temperament attributes with even a short playoff run. On the plus side we're now in the lottery. We actually ended the season with the most goals scored in the league by a fair margin. But due to the horrendous defensive play and our goalies not feeling like making saves it just wasn't enough.

On the rookie side of things Patrik Laine scored 73 points leading all rookies, followed by our own Joel Eriksson Ek at 66 and in tied 3rd place we had Auston Matthews and Tyler Kelleher at 59 each. So our undrafted college player tied Matthews' rookie campaign, I just love how realistic EHM is.

Looking forward to the draft a starter quality goalie is certainly our #1 priority. We already have the scoring to be a contender with our cobbled together offensive core, and we'll be joined by Evgeny Dadonov from the KHL next season to add a lot more scoring threat from the wings. On defence we're a calamity and getting a strong pool of blueline prospects has to be 2nd priority. We do also need a 2nd Centerman to take over for Brouwer sooner rather than later as he's only going to have so much gas left in his tank. I'm going to use the same slightly modified version of the Challenge rules I used in my Vancouver save for draft pick trading, since if I'm allowed free reign with trading for 1st round draft picks things will get far too easy far too quickly. As much as I'm annoyed at how unfair the circumstances of us missing the playoffs were, I do like that I actually have something to build on here. Doing a rebuild when your team is already the Stanley Cup champions doesn't exactly make sense. Here I actually have a non-playoff team with glaringly obvious holes to build upon. Since I can only trade for 2 picks per year (and they can't be higher than a 2nd rounder) I won't be able to fully stock my team that quickly. Based on the Vancouver save I should still be able to have a 80% win rate team by around season 5. But the lack of proper first round picks make getting a starter goalie and top 4 defencemen so hard. Forwards you can get plenty of in the 2nd-5th round, who will have at least a shot at being top 6. Trying to get a .900+ goalie after around pick 20 is nigh on impossible though. Getting good Two-Way defencemen after the teens is also a headache. From that point on it's pretty much all Stay-at-Home type guys or pure offensive defencemen. But generally you can make that work regardless, just won't be getting any Norris Trophies.

I just had to look up Tyler Kelleher in the db to see what was up with him. Being able to get a 60 points scorer(almost) who was undrafted is just silly. This is what he looks like btw:
Image
He started the season with 105 CA, ended it with 112 CA. So a player who was 105 CA played on my 2nd line and put up a Matthews level rookie performance. I've pretty much always maintained the belief that CA/PA essentially doesn't matter as long as the core attributes are at least 12-14, the player has decent speed and good hiddens. This guy pretty much proves that point. In my findings player size seems to have next to 0 impact on performance as well. That seems to hold true here as well. His +/- was pretty horrible though, but I don't necessarily blame a purely attacking winger for goals being scored when he's on the ice. I blame Boychuk falling off a cliff and tanking the 2nd line's +/- in the latter half of the season for that. They were all at +10 or more before Boychuk started getting injured and playing poorly. It's really a shame that happened considering how great the three of them were doing leading up to the new year. I didn't want to split them up in the hopes that they would regain that synergy later in the season. But for next season we're looking at a Tlustý - Eriksson Ek - Nichushkin first line with a preliminary Dadonov - Brouwer - Kelleher second line. Tlustý really turned it on down the stretch and ended the season as our most efficient goal-scorer per minutes on the ice and our 2nd best playmaker. Nichushkin had the most shots on goal of anyone in the NHL this season, hopefully he can work on his accuracy and get those goal totals up in the 40s for next season.

Congrats for winning the Calder trophy philou! Great achievement.

Kelleher i know all too well from my game ... he is ripping my defense apart in every single game i meet him in the NCAA.

29 points with New Hampshire last season and i think about 10 he got against my team ^^. This season he is with Stavanger in norway, also playing in the european champions cup. 32 points in 22 games so far for Stavanger

Seriously, this happens way to often for the lottery not to be rigged. Just won it with a 3.5% chance again. This (well a top 3 pick) happened 10 times in 26 years with the Jets.

I guess I'm in a spot to pick Liljegren once again as he's supposed to go 2nd overall. Or I could get Patrick, but I'm not the biggest fan of his game honestly. Picking a goalie #1 overall is always a risky preposition, if it weren't for me using the challenge rules for draft pick trading I'd just trade down to about 10th and pick up 5 1st round picks and 4 2nd round picks from whichever the worst team picking around there is. But can't do that as it stands.

Now I'm questionning myself if I should move to the NHL. There's two spots available. Piitsburgh and Edmonton.

Edmonton is less interesting. They still have McDavid and Draisatil but no defense and no goalie. McDavid is 27 and Draisatil 28 so they can still be the core of the team for years to come. Like IRL though I'm still questionning how the hell did they still have such a miserable defense and both of their goalies are AHL material.

Now Pittsburgh. They are REALLY interesting IMO. Crosby, Letang, Kessel and Ovechkin (you read that right) are there. Crosby is 36, Ovy 38, Letang 37 and Kessel 36. Aside of those guys they have nothing except Wennberg and two decent prospects in defense. Both Fleury and Murray are gone and the goalies the have are a bit better than AHLers but they have alot of yellow stats too. To me it looks really interesting to possibly take the team and manage the post-Crosby era. Those guys do not have alot of time ahead and a real reconstruction could happen. I could also make it happen real quick. I would keep Crosby and Ovy but Kessel and Letang I could try to trade them and let the team slide to be able to draft well for 2-3 years. I'm thinking about it and it's tempting. Could be a nice challenge.

So I decided to apply for the Piitsburgh job and see what happens next. I took a quick look at what happened in the NHL since 2016 and the Pens were !st in the eastern conference the first 7 years, dropped to 4th then dropped dead last at the 15th place. Quite the drop! :D The did not won any Cups during that time either. Mike Sullivan is still the HC while Gonchar, Recchi and Tocchet are still assistants. Would probably clear Recchi and Tocchet though. Their prospects pool is average at best. Even their first of this year (1st overall 2024) looks average to me. Plenty of work ahead it seems if I land the job.

Good luck with Pittsburgh Philou, sounds like a hard rebuild essentially. I'm guessing all those superstars are starting to be on small contracts due to their age, so should have a lot of cap to work with.

I ended up drafting Liljegren 1st overall. I'll be able to pick up good forward even if I don't have proper 1st round picks in the future, however a proper #1 Dman I have no guarantee at ever being able to draft in the future. The goalie I honestly liked the look of best in this year's draft was Maxim Zhukov, and he was going to go 75th Overall according to ISS. So I snatched him at 40th Overall with my highest 2nd round pick. Even with the post-draft pessimist scout reports he's still being compared to Corey Crawford. So I think I might have struck gold with a proper starter in the first draft, and I didn't even need to use a 1st round pick on him. The draft was quite heavy on undersized skilled Left Wingers so I put a fair few picks into filling up the winger prospect pool. But not after drafting Ryan Poehling 41st Overall with one of the 2 picks I allowed myself to trade for this post-post-season (I'm not following the challenge rules for year 1 since I need to literally build a team from scratch). We also picked up a college Dman who looks quite promising (although a bit to Aggressive for my liking) as well as a long shot Russian dman. This is how the whole draft looked for us:
Image
Aside from the 2nd and 3rd round pick I traded for in the time after the window opens and before the draft happened I also had a spare 6th round pick from the Brian Boyle trade in the pre-season.

In the 10 picks we had I could pick up 6 players with 12+ consistency, which is an above average haul. There weren't that many steals to be gotten in the 120-150 range. But I should have plenty of depth in this pool. The only player who I legitimately expect to not ever play in the NHL for us is Vito Bavaro. He didn't scout as having much upside beyond an underwhelming 4th liner, but at that point there wasn't really much left to pick from. If he's got a bit more growth in him than my scouts expect he's consisten, relaxed and professional though. Downside being low decisions, but I think that can grow a bit with experience and age so hopefully he'll round out in that aspect.

Shindigs I really don't have alot of space. Letang, Crosby, Ovy and Kessel are taking close to 40 millions of my cap just by themselves. The roster is empty and I only have 6 millions left IIRC.

During my playthrough I don't plan on using the UFA at all. I really want to go by the draft. If I go for a UFA this is goig to be a last resort and I'm not taking star players. I've got to say that at 27 years old, Dylan Strome on the UFA market is tempting! :D
