On the same page (above) he invites one and all to 'have at it' But thanks, I will drop him a pm, now.

I added a bunch of examples of my news images to vintagevictory personal gallery - if anyone is interested; once I've completed them all I'll zip em up, resize them all again - and ask tbl if they want to host them...

Thanks for the PM!
I'd love to have this database improved, so do whatever you want to do :D
I won't be able to help at the moment, but it would be great if you could get a group of people together to work on this

I'd love to help with the work on this if possible... I don't know what it would require or how I could help, but I'm very experienced with the game and played like 20 seasons with this this database already. If there's any manual labor you need done, I'd lend a hand.

By the way... I thought I had posted this a while back.... but here's my logo's for this database.... I updated them because I was unimpressed with the original logos that were provided with this one....

Thanks for posting those logos. This project would be great if expanded on or revamped. Definitely a great idea.

Okay...I'll be ready to start work on this on Tuesday...what I really need to know is if someone has a database they've already done a lot of work on and want to see us start with - or if everyone (helmespc and PM so far)wants to start with a 'clean' version 4 or 5.

First off, Thank you again to Pens66! (Finally got a hold of your readme file! Great work!)

Next, I propose changing Saskatoon, Salt Lake, Hamilton, KC, and Las Vegas to Birmingham Bulls, Indianapolis Racers, Cleveland Barons, San Diego Mariners, and New Jersey Devils in game. Just because they are the 'real' teams that most closely align to the time period.

We can attack this a variety of ways...I can (ideally) be on yahoo or msn after 9 pm EST monday, (unfortunatley 2 or 3 am in Europe), or at any other time tuesday (if need be) if you guys want to discuss things further.

Just reply in thread, or PM me.

Thanks

I don't mind your proposed changes there.... the only one I don't care much for is the NJ Devils.... but I don't have a better suggestion...

I would like to eliminate the San Francisco Sharks (as they never played)... I'd suggest maybe Baltimore Blades in their place?

I've also wanted to change the Ottawa Senators in that DB into the Ottawa Civics.... it just seems to make sense.

Other suggestions:

- I saw you had addressed this in your original post by saying we'd add people who had never made it and such. My suggestion would be to go through the junior leagues from maybe 1970-1979 and add anyone who hadn't "made it"... it might be quite a bit of effort, but it would be effective at helping to fill out the minor league teams with "actual" players who would have been playing in the minors at the time. Like you said, a lot of these guys would have made it to the pros had there been this big a league at the time.

- We could add anyone who was drafted to an NHL team during this period to their respective that team's AHL affiliate and set their rights correctly.

- Fill out the AHL with IHL teams from the time... this adds 10 more teams...

Finally finished the news images for the NHL 1979-80 database; I've got 37 home and away uniforms in there; the original teams from pens66 databse and then the seven that I changed in my ongoing project; you can find them here:

Web Page Name

Image

What we need graphics wise from here would be the seven changed logos in the various sizes (if you're still interested helmspc!)

And the rink logos would be great too - but thats just the tip of the iceberg on what needs to be done.

I've decided to work on the database by grabbing a nhl team - checking all the player's info, editing ratings, numbers, essentially changing what needs to be changed, adding player history, changing team affiliate names, adding minor league players, changing staff - (the editor is disagreable about this - but I've managed to do it, and the game doesn't crash after) I can only find owner, gm, asst gm, coach, and one or two other people for each club from the time period - so I'm picking ex players from each club and inserting them as coaches and scouts (most of these IRL are ex-players so it's no big stretch - I don't think teams had staffs this big back then) I'm also entering all players that played on that NHL team or it's farm team for the two years prior.

When I'm done each team, I'm scanning as many hockey player's cards from that team as I can - and I'll put up a link in this thread for each one. I went looking for old images on the web and they're really no better quality than the cards - so I'm gonna stick with the cards...I'm not gonna worry about if the player is on the right team or not (in the card) or in picking a specific year to upload - I'll just pick what I think is the best image of that player from the available cards. If someone wants to 'monkey' with the images in the future to make them all the same - then at least they'll have some raw images sized correctly.

then I'll move onto the next team.

After I'm done the 21 NHL teams, I'll decide how best to take the next step. You'll be able to ascertain my progress from this thread by my uploaded player cards.

Oh, and great logos helmespc! If you want, we can swap this database back and forth and do it together? Or maybe I can rely on you to perform all the graphical tasks?

And your suggestions are great; and I think we will get to them in time...I just want to 'fix' whats already been done first, and then move on...

Or...perhaps I could 'fix' an NHL team and its affiliates - then hand you the database for you to add a junior team's players (just from 79-80), then you hand it back to me and I'll 'fix' another NHL team? I though it would take me a day per team - but its looking more like 2-3...

Let me know...

Hah... those news images are neat. I like seeing uni's for a lot of those non-teams and WHL teams...

I wouldn't mind sticking to graphics for the time being... I've had a lot of experience with them in the past and could probably offer the most in this area. Most of these teams are pretty easy because they have logo's on Chris Creamer's Logo Site or somewhere else on the web....

I'll go ahead and start work on getting logos for for Indy, Birmingham, SD, Cleveland, Devils.... I'll probably do some for the Civics and Blades as well...

I lost my templates from last time when I did it, so it'll take a little while to figure out what I'm doing again, but once I get templates set up, its easy to make logos for new teams....

Well...I've managed to corrupt the databases I've been working on;

I can't seem to change senators to civics without the game crashing; there seems to be a few other 'bogey' teams that will have to be lived with too...Grand Rapids, Brampton, Saginaw to name a few - when I change their names the game crashes...

Luckily I had only completed final revisions to one team (pittsburg) so its not a 'huge' loss...maybe 15-20 hours! (many more with testing) I pushed a 'good run' of no mistakes/crashes and neglected to keep backups..then the Ottawa error screwed me up - couldn't undo the damage like I could in previous 'mistakes' - because of that 'tm' at the end of their name.

Anyways...

I understand better why pens66 picked the 'fake' teams he did - to keep the divisions 'makeup' close to what they were in 79-80 he had to select team locations that would fit the divisions geographically.

At this point I'm ditching Saskatoon, Salt Lake, and KC for Cleveland, San Diego, and Birmingham - but I'm using everything done up to this point to fill in the AHL, which will be 17 historic teams from the 19 original 1979-80 AHL and IHL, (everyone but Birmingham and Cinncy - who are now in the NHL), plus pens66 original db 3 teams I cut, (SAsk, SAlt Lake, KC) plus the extra three teams I did (Calg, NJD, Indy), plus Grand Rapids, Baltimore Blades, Ottawa Civics,
and one other to either be named, or one I'll be forced to use by the game.

So I'm restarting my editing but setting the framework for NHL, AHL, and CHL's first...then I'll start editing individual teams and players. I ain't going to bed tonight until I have the NHL and AHL setup properly again!

Wish me luck

Oh, those rink logos look great BTW!

Try creating invalid teams with the same name.

Or keep the old teams in the database (but not assigned to any leagues), and create new teams from scratch.

Just an update - still working on this - took a two week break off out of sheer frustration!

I can now see why stats were not entered for the existing players!

anyways, not much has changed - have the ahl and nhl setup for 79-80; entering retired nhl players or nhl players that were minor league players in 79-80; from 77-78 and 78-79 team by team - putting them on the 'expansion' teams...

Slow progress - lost lots of data when I changed a non-player to player...computer crashed and every player in entire database was renamed a,a !

Anyways, don't expect the 'finished' version anytime soon - but I'm not giving up, yet!

Once I get through the nhl players, I'll release an updated database before moving onto adding the minor leaguers, and then the junior players...

Will probably create news images for ahl teams by end of xmas hols.

I'm having some fun tweaking the database. Created some noteworthy international players (Novy, Kiessling), a few eventual draftees (though the original modder made a terrific job! - best missing player from those years might be Frank Musil or Petr Klima!).

However, ended up with a terrifying Nordiques squad. Forget the Triple Crown :

Goulet - Stastny - Paiement

Total domination line.

I'd also love to get hold of a copy of this database so I can upload it to our Downloads Section of the site. :-)

Try PMing pens66 (he created it); I MIGHT have a copy somewhere (from when I started the 1974 db), but I know I don't on my current computer...
