Announcing the new Image Gallery

Post by archibalduk »

The Blue Line is proud to present a new site feature: The Image Gallery.
You'll find the new system to be much easier to use and more flexible due to it's improved features and interface.

To access the new Image Gallery, go to the Main Site and click on the "Image Gallery" link located on the navigation bar below the header. Another benefit of our new site design is that this feature will always be just a click of the navigation bar away.

You can also use this URL to go directly to the Gallery: www.ehmtheblueline.com/gallery.

Image

The Image Gallery is made up of Public Galleries and User Galleries.

Public Galleries are open for everyone to browse. Any registered user may also contribute their images to the Gallery. Galleries include the Cool Pics Galleries for EHM 2004 & 2005, which hold EHM screenshots of note, and The Records Room where you can claim an EHM stats record.

User Galleries allow any registered TBL user to store and display their own images. Simply upload an image and you start your own Gallery!

From the Image Gallery main page your pics are found by clicking on the "Your Personal Gallery" link while the "User's Personal Galleries" link will pull up a list of all current TBL Users Galleries.

Image

User profiles now contain a link to that user's Personal Gallery.

Uploading Images
To upload an image, click on the "Upload Image" button located on the index page of every Gallery (i.e. the page displaying the thumbnails). That brings you to the "Upload Pic" page. Enter a title for the image and a description and then click the "Browse" button to select the image you wish to upload.

Image

Use the "Category" pull-down menu to select a category for your image.

Click on the "Submit" button to upload the image. For your reference, directly under the Category menu you will see listed the guidelines for file size, dimension, and type. Currently Galleries allow .jpg, .gif and .png files. Your file won't upload if it doesn't conform to these guidelines.

Upload time may vary due to various factors and current site traffic. You will be shown a confirmation message once the image has been successfully uploaded.

Some of the public galleries require approval before they will become visible on the site. In order to get your images approved most quickly, notify the Admin Team IN THIS THREAD when you have uploaded an image, mentioning the image's category. Your image will then become available upon approval. Images uploaded to a gallery not requiring approval will be available immediately.

User Galleries Guidelines

The User Galleries may be used for hosting images (both personal and hockey-related) to be displayed in the TBL Forums as well as file screenshots to be submitted to the TBL Downloads section.

Currently, images uploaded to your User Gallery do not need to be approved by the Admin Team. That may change in the case of users found to be abusing the system. They may additionally be subject to other disciplinary measures; ranging from a warning to a ban.

Be sure to stay within accord of any copyright that an image may be subject to.

How to link to images hosted in the TBL Image Gallery

First, click on the appropriate image thumbnail from the Gallery index. Then right-click on the image and select "Properties" from the resulting menu. The location of the image will be displayed in the Properties Window. This is the address to link to in order to display the image on the Forums. The name of the image will be coded in this format (where X is a number):

Code: Select all

http://www.ehmtheblueline.com/forums/album_pic.php?pic_id=X
Using Gallery Images as TBL File Screenshots is done in the same manner. The same link information when entered into the upload form on the "Screenshot:" line attaches your image as a screenshot for your file.

Hotlinking Not Permitted or Tolerated "Hotlinking" occurs when a user is linking to an image hosted elsewhere. Images hosted in the TBL Galleries may not be hotlinked at other sites. Likewise, TBL will not accept images hotlinked from other sites. The only images allowed in the forums are those hosted in a TBL Image Gallery or those hosted with a personal image hosting site such as Image Shack.

Hotlinking steals bandwith from the originating site for each time that image is displayed. Many sites trace these links. We don't want our users causing issues for TBL or for other sites by using images hosted by other websites.

How do you get an image, say a Football Manager screenshot and transfer it into a thumbnail suitable for viewing on a web page? Do you resize it first then upload it onto imageshack or what? The problem is that without resizing the pictures they are too large to upload, but by reducing their size they become rubbish quality and grainy...any help?:help:

I am using paint shop pro to resize them...

I'm really sorry! I could have sworn I posted an answer to your question on the day you asked it! Me and my memory :D

Don't resize before uploading to Imageshack. When you upload an image, Imageshack creates the code you need to post the image as a thumbnail in a forum.

When using the resize option in Paint Shop Pro, there's a box at the bottom of the 'resize' window that says "resample using:" Tick the box and then choose "smart size" from the drop-down box next to it. It will prevent the images looking grainy when you resize them.

Your images must be larger than roughly 1mb. What image format are you saving them as? As far as I know, ImageShack doesn't place a limit on the image dimensions - just on its physical size.

I'm guessing that you might be saving the image as a BMP - they're uncompressed and take up a lot of space.

Load the image in Paint Shop Pro, then click on "Save As..." from the 'File' menu. Choose JPEG/JPG from the "Save as type" drop-down box and then click on the "Options" button in the bottom right corner of the window. Make sure the encoding is "standard" and set the compression factor to "5". Then click on OK and save the image. This should ensure fairly decent quality whilst ensuring the file size is under 1mb.

Cheers, Archi. Check out my FM screenshots in the 'FM 2006' thread and let me know what you think. I'll post some EHM ones where relevant from now on too.
