Eight years of The Blue Line!

Post by archibalduk »

Today marks the 8th birthday of TBL! On this day eight years ago, TBL started as a humble GeoCities site which indexed links to the various fan sites and downloads available for the game and hosted my own addons (my first addon being a Red Deer Rebels facepack 8-)). A screenshot of the original site can be found at the bottom of this post (notice any resemblance to the EHM 2004 user interface?!).

This past year has probably been the most eventful and busiest since the release of EHM 2007. Some of the highlights over the past year include creating a patch that changes the EHM start date (aka the Custom Start Date), a variety of new editors and tools, a Scoring Realism Patch (which has brought down the scoring of many leagues to a much more realistic level), and of course a variety of roster updates and projects.

In terms of roster updates, this year has been particularly exciting. The latest version of the Manimal Rosters represent not only the culmination of four seasons of roster updating (since the 2008/09 Lidas Rosters) but also some significant improvements over the past year; such as fixing various NHL rookie issues and updating the player stats and career histories. The rosters have been further boosted by the help of Alessandro and the UUDB Team who have joined forces with Manimal's project. We've also seen the epic development of the 1974/75 Nino33 Rosters and we've recovered some previously unavailable retro rosters.

We also have the great news that a new hockey management simulation game is in development by OOTP Developments, due to be released at the end of this year. Work also continues on the Dabo Hockey Manager game. Additionally, the Challenges (23 and counting) and the DMHNL (30 seasons and counting in the DM:A) continue to be very popular.

I'm sure there's much more that I'm forgetting to mention! :D

Finally, I'd like to say thank you to everybody who continues to support and contribute to the community, be that simply by posting in the forums, creating addons or helping research the roster updates. It has all helped to ensure that the community and EHM remains strong so many years after EHM 2007 was put on hiatus. On a personal note, it's still a blast running and developing the site thanks to everybody who continues to make this a fun place to visit.

Butbut... 8 years here? But that means the Peliplaneetta freeware EHM boards were even considerably older, and... I don't know that I can handle that... *brain explodes*.

Geeez, have I really been playing the freeware EHM for THAT long? Let alone the NHL: EHM series?...

I know, time really has flown!

I guess I started playing EHM Freeware back in 2002 (a decade ago :-o ) but haven't touched it since EHM 2004. It looks like the posts on the SI Forums have been archived, but back in the summer of 2003, myself and my brother (Calv) transformed Championship Manager 4 into a hockey manager of sorts by creating our own hockey rosters, background packs, etc! :D I remember playing that for about a year until EHM 04 was released. I think I still have the CD backup of it somewhere...

I still quite vividly remember EHM 2004 arriving in the mail a day before release date - most probably because I'd been looking forward to it since its development was announced in 2003! :D

Happy Birthday, TBL.

8 years... that's massive. That's a piece of history there. A great testimony to how much a few committed people can do. To think that, in the world characterised by the rapidness of Twitter snippets, news that last for a second and are forgotten by the time we change the channel, where mobiles phones are replaced every year or two, where most people don't even bother to look at a computer game that doesn't blow them out of their chairs with its graphics... that five years after the demise of a simple text-based and bug-filled game, packed with rows after rows of numbers and values, one can still find a community so dedicated to keeping it alive.

Unimaginable, like.

Or p'raps it just means we're still having fun. :-D

Keep up the good work, guys. It's been appreciated. :notworthy:

wow, 8 years already? That's pretty spectacular. I still remember running a league with the old freeware version -- man, I'm definitely getting old. Actually, the way everything unfolded for me, I was actually playing Championship Manager back in 2000 or so and said to myself: "self, wouldn't it be great if someone made a HOCKEY management game?" and then I found the peliplaneetta site (which wasn't particularly easy to find at the time) and the rest is history.

Happy birthday! 8 years is legit for a group of people who love this game. A lot of great stuff on this site. The updated rosters and the amount of work the Manimal team put into them have been greatly appreciated. Thanks again guys!
